gloopy ears

I've got a 6 year old boy who's going deaf? Seems to have gloopy stuff in his ears sometimes. Any ideas what to do?

Take him to your doctors, he may have an ear infection. Your doctor will be able to give him some anti-biotics if it is an infection.

Thanks, sorry i should have said that I have been to the doctor. He says it is just earwax and it will pass - any ideas for getting rid / stopping ear wax?

There are some good products at the chemist these days. Tell your chemist what you're after and they can advise you.

I once had Hopi ear candles put in my ears (very pleasant I might add).  The lady who treated me said that lukewarm olive oil is better than the stuff you buy from the chemist.  I suspect some GPs think this kind of problem is a bit too mundane for them and a nurse, e.g. the school nurse, might be better at helping you.  I have to say that in my experience ear wax does not go away by itself and it can't be pleasant for him to be going deaf.  My suggestion therefore would be to try oil and if it has not worked after a few days,  contact the school nurse.

I have suffered from ear wax for 30 years or more. The usual de-waxing process is for my wife to pour olive oil into each ear at bedtime for a couple of weeks, then a visit to the practice nurse, who rinses it all out with warm water. An odd experience. The experts say that a weekly dose of oil is sufficient to prevent the build-up, but we are never that self disciplined at bedtime ...

While a patent medicine such as Audiclene may well work, I should consider how much it is going to cost. The bit about "purified sea water" puzzles me. What do they take out - the fish? the seaweed? the sand? the salt? Talk to your health visitor, he/she will have seen many, many ears embellished with wax.

this sounds like GLUE EAR.Take him back to the doc.They can put things called GROMMETS in his ear

I agree with gillyflower about glue ear. My neice had this and suffered terribly. She was totally deaf and you always had to shout at her. Once she got the grommets fitted the difference was unbelievable although on the downside she did have to give up her swimming lessons.

This is one of the conditions that can be treated by cranial osteopathy, a gentle and amazingly efective treatment. Ask in your local wholefood store, they seem to be populated by people who know where the best local complementary therapists are! (got to be worth trying this before surgically implanted grommets).
