Hi, a friend has just told me that he claims his fuel costs back via a tax returns form, he is employed the same as me not sub-contracted or self employed, i drive 100 miles a day to work and have never even thought about claiming fuel costs, does anyone know if this is possible.

Thank you

Driving to a place of work is not claimable . However if after you have got to work and then use your car for business use then that is claimable at 40p per mile up to 10,000 miles and then 25p after that. You would need to claim on a P87 the tax office will go back six years for claims . If you are getting some fuel expenses from your employer you can only claim the difference between employers payment and top allowance 40p.ie if employer pays 15p per mile then you can only claim 25p per mile.
As the man says above.
The only way you would get away with it is if your employer agrees that your normal place of work is home. Then travelling to any other place would be claimable.
But the only way you would get away with your normal place of work being home is if you are on the road a lot.
And claiming you work from home has other tax complications.

Your friend is mistaken.
To allow you to claim travel expenses from your home, the duties of your job must compel you to live there and nowhere else. It's not enough to have your employer agree to let you work from home - or even for your employer to force you to to do so. I agree with Ethel; your friend is mistaken.
yep as above travel to/from normal place of work is not claimable. When they find out they'll want it all back + interest. Could well be prosecuted also for telling porkies on the form. tut tut!
Plus I should imagine you would need receipts!

receipts are irrelevant, it's not a claimable expense
