they play 2 halves 0f 20 minutes long
each team has 4 subs, each player is subbed so that all players are on the pitch the same length of time,how long is each player on the pitch?

Each team has 240 (6x40) player-minutes to fill, shared between 10 players, so that's 24 minutes per player.

6 men for 40 minutes = 240 man-minutes

10 players share this so answer = 24 minutes each

I shall now investigate why swannbaker thinks it will not work in practice.

at the minute i agree with swannbaker-the 4 subs can only replace 4 other players-so 2 players would have to play the whole game ?

It depends upon the rules of substitution. It is possible so long as a substitute can go on for 8 minutes, come off and then go back on again for 16 minutes later - also, as long as a player who comes off when a substitute goes on, is allowed to return to the field at a later stage in the game.

Just 4 players would have to come off and go on again later.

The game starts with players 1 - 6 on the field and reserves A B C D at the side

after 8 mins call off 2 and 5 substitute B and C
after 16 mins call off 3 and 4 substitute A and D
after 24 mins call off 1 and 6 substitute 2 and 5
after 32 mins call off B and C substitute 3 and 4

so on the field during each 8 minute section are:-
