is there a restriction on how much money you can take in ? if so what is the best way round this and are US dollars or sterling acceptable, which of the two is best ? ATMs, presume they have them in Cairo but what about Luxor etc. Any tips appreciated, its over 20 yrs since I visited and obviously things have changed.
There is a limit on the amount of egyptian pounds you can take in, thinks its 5000 LE.
Sterling and US dollars are both accepted, I went last year and I took sterling travellers cheques, my brother took dollar ones, neither of us had any problem changing them. I also used the cashpoint machine which was inside our hotel in Luxor.
Take a small amount of local money E3000 (300) and top up as you need at ATMs. They are all over the place. You bank will charge you about 2 per transaction.
Stirling, euros and dollars are easily changed (or spent) anywhere, but to contradict another post, travellers cheques are not so easy to change.
Prices in Egypt are very cheap, so why do you need to take a lot of money with you?
