Vauxhall Astra whining noise when steering left

My 2000 Astra 1.4i has just developed a whining noise, only steering towards the left, and not every time. I noticed someone else had the same thing, so there must be a specific cause. Has anyone had it fixed, and if so how much was the repair if it was not something simple you could do yourself?

sounds like bearing same happened on my dads car, but first of all just to save u time and money just jack ure car up and check the wheel nuts are tight! as i had a noise and vibration coming from my front end to find out somebody had loosened 3 out of my 4 wheel nuts on my wheel!

ps ure looking at about �40 for th ebearing rough guess unless u get it off ebay like i did and an hours labour at garage �40 again

It's unlikely to be something you can do for yourself and it's unlikely to be a wheel bearing or loose wheel nuts as these would be a rumbling or clancking sound..

Have you checked your power steering fluid level?

If that is OK it could be a power steering valve or dry seal.

if the noise is there when you turn the steering in a certain direction it will be the wheel bearing i had the same prob when i had my whole astra. if it is the older astra then tthe hub section does not come off the strut seperately, the whole strut has to com off the car in order to press the old bearing out and then press the new one in so no its not something you could do yourself. some of the newer astras and zafiras have a bolton bolt off system where the whole bearing assembly can be changed without the use of a hydraulic press.

Just to clarify: The whining is more like you get in water pipes in central heating, so sounds more like the valve or seal in steering system.
