The Colour Of Magic was the first Discworld novel and can be bought relatively cheap from charity shops.
Guards!Guards! is the introduction to the Watch characters and is great fun
I hate him with avengence yet have read all his books and will probably read all his future work. I think Mort is his best book. The first Discworld books are rough round the edges but by the time he got to Mort he had polished up his writing style.
the one that hooked me was equal rites, but they are all good. The earlier ones are simpler and rougher, the later ones more polished and thought provoking. I thought that "totally postal" and "monstrous regiment" were different again and excellent. All of them are full of different ideas and thoughts
A cracking author, very witty and dry.  The first book I got was a trilogy of books called The WItches. Found myself laughing out loud on the train.  Well worth it.
