North Cyprus property
2 Answers
Not really a travel question but posted here due to the number of knowledgable people that post... in the 1950's my late father bought a plot of land outside Kyrenia in now what is Northern Cyprus. How on earth can I find out where it is and can I have it back?! Thanks

This might involve employing a solicitor if your efforts do not bring out help from the officials. Remember that (unless you know otherwise) it may already have been disposed of by your father. Then once I had the details of the location, etc. I would travel to the north and try to locate the plot - be prepared to find that it has already been built on. Finally, the challenge is to persuade the northern authorities to accept your claim to the land. If you find little or no sympathy then probably the only course you might consider is to turn to the EU and see if they are willing to listen to you and offer advice.
Yup, good advice, Karl. The area around Kyrenia was extensively settled by Turks who came across from the mainland in the 30 years since the partition. In many cases land was used that was owned by those of Greek origin. The Greek authorities should be able to help you initially in identifying the plot and the provenance of its pre-1974 ownership. Then you've got to go and see what is on it now.
