i live in west london and for the last few weeks there have been lights in the sky ,they are coloured, very bright and powerful spotlights and they shine straight up in the sky,and rotate, and when there is low cloud they look really eerie and spooky ,as the lights just bounce off the base of the clouds ,this happens early evening 7pm ish at first i thought it was QPR's lights but i think they are further west than that, anyone have any ideas or know what they are??

I've seen similar things in Dagenham. My and my boyfriend were walking home on Sunday night and saw different colour lights reflecting off the clouds, it was about 10pm ish i think. we also saw them last night at about the same time, not sure if they happened on the days in between or at other times. We wondered if it was anything to do with West Ham, as it was in that kind of direction. they did look like spotlights going straight up but they moved about.
My guess would be you're seeing the Oxford Street Xmas lights which this year are a series of coloured search lights at various point along the street spinning and rotating to point along the street and up into the sky, there also appear to be some on the roofs of buildings.

Yes I've seen them too and apparently they are from the Oxford St. lights. Nice idea cidermonkey about West Ham, perhaps they could run to torch eh?
We had them in our area recently (NW London) and the local paper carried a piece about it being UFO's ! although they also thought it could be from the Westlife concert at Wembley Arena. They following week they had solved the mystery... It turned out to be a new Pizza restaurant opening using powerful spotlight type things to draw attention to it. so could be something similar.

they are the wrong direction for wembly but the oxford st lights are in the right direction,so that is what they probably are, many thanks to you all for your replies
why haven't I seen them? I feel left out!
My housemate pointed them out to me last night. Apparently they look much better from far away than they do when you're actually on Oxford Street.
I live in South London and have also seen strange spotlights shining up onto the clouds above Wandsworth Common and also Streatham. These lights are all white however, does anyone know of an opening of a club or restaurant that would explain this? Every time i walk out of my front door i think im witnessing the Northern Lights.

ive seen them from my place in canary wharf it is 2 do with the new olympic thingy what a pain up the tushy they r and even more so dangerous 2 drivers who look up and r more likley 2 cause an accident

thatclears that 1 up

I'm not so sure.  You can see them all over London. At first we thought they were coming from Regent's Park, then we saw them in Stoke Newington and again in Kilburn.  These ones aren't coloured, just white strobe lights and they've been around at least two weeks now moving as if searching the sky.  any official real answers as to what they are?

it was on the radio that it is 2 do with the olympics
