how to rid a computer of the Trojan Packed 7 spyware application? It seemingly comes in 3 stages, and manages to avoid spybot S & D and other security measures.
Thanks.

Hi Icey

Your antivirus software should be able to get rid of the problem as long as you disable System Restore first.

1. Disable System Restore. (In XP, ensure that you're logged on as an administrator. Then go to Start > My Computer > Properties > System Restore. Place a check mark alongside 'Turn off System Restore'. Click 'Apply', 'Yes' and 'OK').

2. Use the 'update' option, in your anti-virus software, to check that it's fully up to date.

3. Run a full system scan with your antivirus program. (Avoid options such as 'smart scan' or 'intelligent scan'. Ensure that your software scans all files).

4. Follow any on-screen instructions to delete (or quarantine) infected files.

5. Turn System Restore back on again.

If that doesn't work, try again (with System Restore switched off) after booting your PC into Safe Mode. Instructions for entering Safe Mode are here:

You never disable System Restore until your system is clean. An infected Restore is a lot wiser than having nothing to fall back on if it goes belly up.
Trojan Packed 7 is a very vague description, it would be better if you can say what the infected file is, ie C:\Windows\System32\blahblah.exe
