Car passed MOT today, thankfully
quick question, does anyone know what the legal requirement is for smoke test on a diesel on MOT, last year it was done on a fast pass and limit was 150 and the reading was 131, this year the certificate says limit is 300, and there are 3 readings which bring in average of 161 so it passed, but not sure why the limits changed etc?
Any idea anyone, I know it passed just want to know as if it was done on the 150 it would fail, so not sure if need to do any work
Got some advisory notes also about front brake hoses are wearing, anyone know how much this owuld cost to repair?

A fast pass is when it meets the lowest limit on the first time it is reved to full throttle, if it does not meet this limit the machine defaults to the higher limit and does an averge over a maximum of six full throttle revs
AS for brake hoses about an hours labour a side (�50) plus parts plus vat a non franchise garage will be cheaper

2.50 PPM (particles per million) for a non turbo.
3.50 ppm for a turbo charged engine
(i think so anyway!!)

sometimes there can be a build up of black soot in the exhaust which can effect the emission test. give it a good run before its tested again. there is no facility for a "fast pass" on a diesel only a petrol. different software and equipment are used to test a diesels emissions.

My MOT was done yesterday - my car is diesel and it was done on a fast pass - I have double checked the MOT emissions sheet - it says diesel at the top and was definately fast pass.

must have failed the fast pass then, but got through the other one with flying colours, it gave 3 readings and then the average of 161 with pass of 300 required

well certainly when i was doing mots the equpment we used fo petrol cars was different to that of the diesels and only the petrols had the option of a fast pass. its a different test altogether for diesels as they are only revved to the max 3 or 4 times and the petrol is revved at around 2500rpm for a few minutes and if the emissions are ok in this period it is termed as a fast pass, if they are not it must go through a more detailed test which includes taking oil temp etc etc
