For most, going west meant traveling by both wagon and boat. But who was the guy who figured out how to do both at once?

Hi, I am just wondering.... it says by both wagon AND boat at the same time. They had to make rafts for the wagons to cross a lot of the rivers and streams. this led to the ferry boats. boats and wagons going west at the same time.
I don't know. I am still looking for the gun barrel to veiw big valley and wagon train. even though I watch both shows each day on the tv.
thanks much,
Carrie
