How do I retain my phone number with Virgin Media?

I currently have phone line rental with Toucan however I have agreed for Virgin to take over on saturday. The problem is that I want to keep the same phone number, but virgin say that first they must install their number and that afterwards I can change it back to the one I have now. Is this how it works? I thought that it was possible (and easier) to retain the number!

That's strange as that is not the way it worked with me. My number was transferred the day they did the installation. I don't know if it made any difference that it was a BT number......
