I personally think that you shouldn't take perscriptive drugs without the doctors permission. Especially not valium.

A few years back I went to Goa and purchased 12 Valium tablets for 50p. I did 2 before making a 10 hour coach journey back to Mubai and worked a treat - basically gave me happy dreams for 90% of the journey - Although I did throw up on the way.
And another piece of advice if you are going to take valium; do not mix it with alcohol, not even a little.

Speak to a different doctor if you think your GP is being unfair.

Totally agree Ahmed, getting prescription drugs from the internet is not recommended.... You never know what's in them and what quality they are.
Sarwal,Why dont you buy one of the Bach Rescue Remedies? If you go to a healthshop they will advise which one is best for anxiety.A couple of drops in the tongue gives instant calmness.
I thing the above is a very good suggestion, and you can get Back rescue remedy as a spray too, which will be easier on the plane.
I have read that it is dangerous to take any kind of sedative because it increases the risk of DVT. Not sure if that's true, but as your oxygen levels are lower than normal when you are airborne...and sedatives depress your breathing, I don't think it's a good idea.
