We are a small contractor being VAT registerd is a bind, but enforced at the best of times, but returnig VAT to a customeris mental! Especially when you havent a clue how to enter it on the return. Please advise, as we dont wont them to learn of our ignorance.
One of our Better customers converted a Church, from deralict, to flats. They informed us, two months after completion & the fourth & final payment had been made, that they wanted the VAT being listed, the works were exempt. We dont want to loose the money, so would like to learn the correct legal means of acheiving this. Please

Contact your VAT Office and ask them for their advice.
Some building work is charged at full VAT rate and some at a lower rate or zero. It is far safer to get the VAT man to agree the rate to be used before refunding any or all of the VAT.
I work for a small contractor and we have an ongoing problem with a customer who has queried the VAT we have charged because it is a listed building etc. We as anniebird has suggested went straight to Revenue and Customs and asked their advise, which was, its up to the supplier to decide on the amount of VAT to be charged, they cannot and will not give a decision. Your customer, however, should have a certificate from Revenue and Customs saying that they can have a lower rate VAT or zero rated VAT charged.
