For my first, I had basic foam mattress that was used for her cotbed and was used for abour 4 years before she got her full sized single bed.
This time round we have been looking at the firmer mattresses, again for use on a cotbed, and have been looking at ones costing sround the 50 mark from Babys R Us. Actually, as baby is two months old already, we had better get a move on with getting her cot lol

I would by an appropriate quality one depending on how long you are going to use it. For a cot bed, it would be worth spending a little bit more as they may be in it for a few years, for a normal cot which they may grow out of quite soon, I don't think it is worth spending too much as long as it provides appropriate support and meets relevant safety standards.
My friends bought an all singing and dancing sprung mattress for their daughters cot and she rarely ever slept in the cot - she was in their bed most of the time. My kids both came out of their cot by 14 months as they could climb over it and it was safer to put them in a toddler bed. We had a normal cot with a mid priced mattress, but I would have been quite annoyed if I had paid a lot for it then only to use it for a year.
It is much better to wait and spend the extra on a good mattress for them when they are in a proper bed. So many mattresses that come with kids beds are really terrible with springs almost showing through the covering - by that time, they are heavier and will feel more and need the support for their growing bodies.
