I went to University in Hull and it was a damn good three years. It was a total shock to the system, being from "the South", but it is certainly one of the most underestimated places in the UK.
It shoots itself in the foot purely on its geographical location; you don't need to pass through Hull unless you are getting a ferry to Holland. Therefore, you could say that the City is at the end of a 30 mile cul-de-sac. Earlier on this year I went to the Deep, the world's first submarium. It was on my doorstep at Uni but I never went. It puts the London Aquarium to shame.
There are run down areas in need of regeneration and yes, the women wear hardly anything on a night out, but is this not like most other cities in the country?
It's fair to say that if you live in Hull, you'll probably want to get out of it as often as you can, which is very handy as you have some excellent surrounding countryside within 15 minutes drive from the city centre:- Skidby, Beverley market town (& racecourse), Driffield, Scarborough, Bridlington, and other villages toward the south along the Humber estuary/A63 dual carriageway (turns into M62). York is just 38 miles away.
If you're not driving to Hull, then I highly recommend Hull Trains, serving the city from London and a few places in between. The city centre has also been regenerated since Sept 2007 with a new (but third) shopping centre, with the usual high street shops inside and perhaps the biggest NEXT store in the country??
By car, Derbyshire is 60 mins away, Leeds about the same and Manchester about 1h 30 mins.
I'm going back again next Saturday for a night out. I try and go back a few times a year. Excellent.
