?? on toast ?

I posted this on food and drink a couple of weeks ago without success, so will try it on Q & P where the brains live. Most questions get answered on this site.
What is the name of the traditional cheese and ale sauce typically served grilled on toast?
I don't think this is Welsh Rarebit which everybody -(well at least 9) keeep telling me. Welsh rarebit does not necessarily have to have ale wheras the wording of the question indicates that ale is a basic ingredient, and the word traditional suggests that this will be a regional version of cheese on toast and will call for a specific cheese rather than cheeese in general.
Any suggestions or am I trying to read too much into what may be a simple quiz question?
