The hair on my face and head will keep growing unless I shave or have a haircut, however, the hairs on my arms, legs, chest + pubes only grow so long then stop growing. Why is this? why does it happen and how does body hair know which length to stop growing? TIA
every hair will grow to a certain length, if you kept shaving hair on yuour head it will grow back same as legs and face. Its juts that hair on head grows longer, some people can grow hair long others cant
Evolution. Our bodies no longer need as much of the vellus peach fuzz hair as we did when we were naked Neanderthals running around in all weathers.
Also skin cells are a factor. Body hair tends to be shorter and thinner as it is not connected to sebaceous whereas the coarser terminal hair is. People with really thick hair on their head have more sebaceous glands, as the density is determined by the amount of anagen per square centimetre.
I was thinking about this today- how come old mens ear and nose hair grows more as they get older. The answer I think is- the purpose of this hair is to catch bacteria before it enters the body. The body knows that as you get older you are more prone to infection and less good at fighting it off. So BLESS IT, it grows more hair to try and keep you living healthier for longer!
jno, Neanderthals are the same species we are and they contributed their genes to European ancestry. If you ever visited Romford you could see the evidence.
