Are employers allowed to mention if a person has been signed off with depression on a reference?

They will definately be allowed mention the number of days that you have been off sick but I'm not sure that they can say why.
Surely it would be a breach of confidentiality if they disclosed why you were off work.
on the other hand, if i was an employer i would hate to discover that I'd just hired a nutter. Surely they have the right to unearth mentals?
