his mobility is now very bad and I think
he needs 24 hour cover ...should I ask
him if he would go in to a care home ..

You could ask him, though it may be best coming from a family member or even a doctor, that way he gets told this by someone else and then can come to you for advice.

If round the clock cover means he gets a better lifestyle, then he should go into care, even though I personally think that most people dread the thought of this.

I wouldnt run it by him first -think you need to do some homework first then perhaps you could be the one ultimately who gently runs it by him in a reassuring way -then he'll not think he's being 'stitched' up like some old ones do -and will think/know thats its for his own good and you'll always come and visit him.

What a nice carer you are xxx

he has 2 bros ..not seen them in years ..
they keep in contact via the phone ...
as they are now all in there 80's ...so
they don't know what he is now like ...
he likes a shower everyday and clean kit ..
will they do that for him in a home ?
I work in a hospital and these are the typical kind of things that would be best assessed by your friend's GP. If he has reduced mobility and difficulty in carrying out activites of daily living (cleaning, cooking etc....) then perhaps a district nurse or home help could be arranged (and as it would be done through NHS you wouldnt have to worry about financial stress either)
If that route was found not to help then a care home may be the option, but I would definately go through your doctor initially. Hope it all goes well.....
