Puppy teething!
17 Answers
Hey all,
We got Cleo a couple of months ago, she was born on the 9th December '07. At first she chewed alot, anything she could get her little teeth into!
She then stopped for a good few weeks and has been very good, but now, especially today she seems to have really started again.
At the minute, she is sat next to me on the sofa, chewing a sock to death!
Now I know she shouldnt be chewing a sock, but she doesnt seem that interested in her chew toys, and her being sat next to me and kept occupied is the only way I can keep an eye on her!
I don't know if maybe she is playing up because my other half has gone out for a couple of hours and she is left with me? He normally works from home, so is always with her whilst I am out at work, and its not often that it is just me and her alone! Is she teething again or just playing up with me because daddies not here!?
Ta!

Then again, I remember Jack was teething at about 5-6 months, so it seems around the same time-excuse my maths!
Do you have any rawhide chews that you can pop in the freezer for a little while for her? They calm the swelling and soreness if she is teething, and might keep her occupied for a wee while if she isn't!

Hey hun :)
I've just had a little look in her mouth, and she is missing 2 teeth from the bottom front row!
So I'm guessing that may be causing it!
She gets far more attention from me then she does Alan! But she also plays up alot with me which doesnt help things!
Both dogs seem to know daddy is boss and mum is a push over!
She has a pack of rawhide sticks, so shall I put a couple of them in the freezer for a while? They definitely keep her occupied!

Hey :)
The fur family are great ta!
We are off to my sisters for a couple of days tomorrow, so Ashke is off to the kennels, and Cleo is coming with us (my sister has 2 dogs, so all 4 dogs can be too much at times!).
We have been to the vets with Cleo today as we found yesterday she does get car sick lol! After she was in her new car harness in the back and projectile vomitted all over the back of my car :( So she now has some travel tablets as its an hour and half journey!
The cats are all fine, sleeping at the mo it would seem as it is strangely quiet in the house!
How are you? And how is little Jack doing?

Hi hun, oh dear! I know just what you mean! Steve definitely has the authority in this house...I am woefully lacking in it!
The rawhide acts a little like a baby's soother (one of those ones you put in the fridge). They won't need too long in the freezer, I would definitely recommend you give it a go! I didn't know Jack was teething until I saw blood on a toy, and when I asked about it at puppy class and the vet checked him over, she said he was almost completely adult in the tooth region!

Cleo had her puppy class last night, what fun!
She is by far the most excitable, yet overly confident and playful pup there! She sulks when she is not allowed to play with the other dogs and throws herself to the floor looking all hard done by when she is meant to be doing sit, yet when it comes to lie down, she jumps around like a nutter!
My Ashkes teeth bleed when he has a rawhide chew, but he is now coming up to 4, so dont know what that could be? hmm!
How long shall I leave them in the freezer for do you think hun?

oh poor baby! Hope the tabs work and the journey is stress- (and puke-) free for you all!
Is Ashke OK in kennels? He seems pretty laidback. Usually!
Glad all is well hun.
Yeah, OK here, a lot of stress with work and Uni, but otherwise OK. And Jack is fine, as ever! A bundle of mischief!
Have a great time away sweetie xxx

Haha, oh she is funny hun! What a madam ;)
Poor Ashke, does he have sensitive gums? how is he with his food? Has that always happened?
I would say an hour is enough, chick, I never put mine in any longer, you don't want them to freeze over (bbrrr!), just be nice and chilled for them. If you have a good fridge, that might do the job equally well. XX

We are taking Ashke to the kennels we took him to in January for the weekend, it is on a farm and each kennel is around 4 x 5 foot with a bigger space outside. Plus they have a concrete excercise area, and a fenced off field they let them in aswell. When we picked him up last time, the man said that Ashke loved bounding around the field doing his mountain goat impressions! He is a very very laid back dog, just as well really with Cleo around!
Ohh didnt know you were at uni, what are you studying?
I did Animal care at college for a year, really wish I had stayed on, but I did pass my course with distinction :)

Ashke is funny with his food, when he has his dinner inside, he will eat a mouthful, then walk around in little circles looking slightly uncomfortable and like he is breathing in, and then will go back for another mouthful, then walk round looking funny again, and it goes on til he has finished!
There are now 4 rawhide sticks in the freezer, and will try her with one in an hour and see how it goes. She has given up on the sock, and is now dragging a rubber chicken round the front room!

Definitely the right age for teething. Give her plenty of things like pigs ears, or knuckle bones, or rawhide chews, as like babies they need to chew to relieve the pain and to help the baby teeth come out to let the adult ones have room to come through. Another tip is to put a clean face flannel in the freezer, so she can chew on something cold but soft.
I would have Ashke's teeth checked, as he may have one/some that have not grown or come through properly and may be causing the bleeding.

Hey Lankeela, thanks for your reply :)
I have all sorts of chews and toys that are meant to be for teething (rings with sticky out bits on, although I can imagine them being more painful then anything!)
She has a huge pack of rawhide sticks which we are giving her, but I'm worried about giving her too many as I know Cavaliers can be prone to getting overweight. Could chews contribute to this os should I not worry about rawhide overload!?
I have put some in the freezer, and she has had one but has finally gone to sleep so by the time she wakes up it will of warmed up!
Ashke is due for his booster jabs at the beginning of next month, so will ask the vet then about his teeth.
Ta!

My Smooth Collie used to swallow socks whole when you took them off if you forgot to pick them up. Then he would sick them back up a few minutes later, all yellow and twisted together and unable to be saved. Lost count of the socks I had to throw out because of it. He never actually chewed them though.
Oh yes, I had one of Pat Lister's, a blue merle out of her breed record holder. His brother sired the current breed record holder. He qualified for Crufts, but sadly he had ears that preferred to point skywards, and no matter what I tried they would not stay tipped! However, looking at the Smooths today, he would have done well anyway. To bring this thread back in line (sort of!) his ears started to go up when he was teething.
For all those who want an instant puppy, I booked him in 1985 and then waited four years for the right one to be born.

Now that is love, lankeela! ;)
I think Smooth Collies re so handsome. Very striking dogs.
wiggal, your account of Ashke's eating really made me chuckle, but yeah I think lankeela is right, maybe you should get him checked out JIC. I know you would hate for him to be uncomfortable.
Did Cleo get a chilly chew, or were they all warm by the time she got up again?! What a babe...Is she still in that sleeping lots stage, or not so much now?
Well done on your distinction! Are you hoping to follow it on with something related? Starting to think I should have got into animals earlier and done something animal-related!
I am a Youth and Community Worker, studying same at Uni (St Martins in Lancaster). I love it but it is hard work. I am currently embarking on my last few months, ~phew~...!
In summer I would like to get my Jack-boy into the local agility club. I think he would love flyball! But I need to help him brush up on some of his basic training first, as he is a bit, erm, excitable!
My friend got Jack a rubber chicken for his birthday; I find them creepy! So I have to look away when he is bashing it against my knees and encouraging me to throw it around for him!
Hope you are having a great time away hun xxx
