Resisting the age of wireless
4 Answers
Hi I live in Spain in the back of beyond where they still point at planes, in the village we have just got (for an extortionate price) 1 meg ADSL with a one port router and as no one in the technical department at Telefonica (Spain's version of BT) speaks anything but Spanish I am for several reasons loath to get a wireless system. Could anyone point me in the direction of some kind of splitter that I could buy and install so that I can run a laptop and the main computer at the same time... is there such a thing - or perhaps a multi port router is my only option (and believe me I can't buy one of them locally either!) Many Thanks

You say you have a one port router - is it wireless, or do you mean you have a one port modem?
If you bought a 4 port wireless router you have the option of going wireless, or connecting 4 pcs to it by ethernet cable.
I'm sure there will be some English speaking computer shop in any of the major costa towns that can provide you with the correct router.

Hi Ethel, thanks for the reply , as I say I really don't want to go wireless and despite making the 120 mile+ round trip to the nearest costa I cannot buy a 4 port router (I assume it to be a router because it is a 'router monopuerto' I have installed at the moment but it may well be a modem) as everything for sale there is wireless.
I was therefore hoping there was such a thing as a 'splitter' type of device.
If not I will go back to the drawing board :o(

You will see in my answer that a wireless router has 4 ethernet ports to connect up to 4 pcs by ethernet cable. You do not have to go wireless.
Is it possible to phone a computer shop (English speaking) and have what you need delivered?
If you are with Telefonica you need a xavi x7768r 4 port modem/router. Here is an English translation of the manual

If you have a single port whatever does it need you to log on when you start ... or is it connected all by itself?
(did you have to enter an ID and password into it when you first set it up?)
if it does the logging on ... it's a router.
if it's a router ... what you need is a switch or hub (with only two pcs it doesn't matter which.

the magic word is UPLINK ... if it's got it ... you just need
straight cat 5 network cables (3)
1 from router to switch ... 1 to each PC.
this puppy is a decent price ... and does have it

if no uplink ... you need 2 cat5 cables +1 cat5 CROSSOVER cable
either way ... your ouno puerto becomes threeo puertos
(you loose one connecting to the other deviceo)
