The MIB is funded by each and everyone of us who pay for motor insurance - 30 of every policy is to compensate people hit by uninsured drivers.
The compensation is capped - so the victim will not get anything like the amount for personal injury that they would if the driver was injured.
It will NOT pay for damage to your own car if you are insured fully comp and will not pay out at all if the vehicle causing the damage cannot be identified.
It makes me so angry that some people defend uninsured drivers, stating they are covered by MIB. The payout is peanuts compared to the same circumstances by an insured driver, and MIB increases my insurance premium each year by 30.
Having said all that, MIB is on the whole excellent at what they do, curtailed as they are. They are professional and efficient.
