It was by a great 70's band called Bread.

There was another version called "(Dance with the) Guitar Man" by Duane Eddy.

Guitar man by Elvis was about a wannabe singer trying to get a job working as a guitarist "But nobody wanted to hire a guitar man".

The different song by Bread (a ballad) was about an ageing guitarist, still trying to knock out his old songs to a diminishing support.
