North Italy - Hotels or camper van - travelling for one week around

we're planning on travelling from milan to pisa for 10 days in july. Should we hire a camper van or just book a hotel for each night. We just want to stay 1 night and then move on. We budget �800 for hotels but a camper van seems cheaper, do you have to stay at campsites or could you just pull up whereever you fancy?
anyone done it before????/
We're starting in milan and then going to venice, maybe down to pisa and back up!

I did something similar and it was awesome, you're sure to have a great time :)
We stayed in hotels and apartments during our stay and used http://www.holistay.com/italy/ but you could also use the usual big sites because they sometimes have deals.
