locked out computer

Can anyone tell me what I have done to my computer I was working on excell this morning I left the computer for a while when I came back it would not let me type anything. And nothing is high lighted on the task bar as though the whole thing has locked. When I tried a word document the same thing happened. This is just happening on word and excell HELP

just restart the machine?

Have tried that twice everything else works just can not type anything

does that mean you can't type in anything?
or that everything boots ok ... but you can't type?

have you checked that the keyboard is plugged in?
or that the wireless keyboard has new batteries
or that the onscreen keyboard works in the apps
