If you have a local DVLA office you can take all docs to them and they will issue new tax disc and amend MOT if applicable. You will need to but tax but the remainder of tax will be transferred to new disc so you wont loose out.
If in any doubt ring their helpline - in the past have found them very helpful.

If you purchase from DVLA website (their costs include the transfer fee and makes it easier with regard to paperwork)and pay via card you should have docs with you by mid next week i should think, then if you take ALL your documents with you they should be able to amend/change it all there and then.
One you've done that you can use your V948 to but new plates. (Tip - keep old plates somewhere safe as if you transfer to another car your present car may be issued with old number).
One tip don't change your care very often as it's more complicated changing from one to another - first time change is a doddle !
As i said before any doubts ring DVLA and speak to cherished transfer section. THINK the no is 0870 850 0007 but please check
