Help problem with car insurance
12 Answers
On the 22/04/08 my husband took out some car insurance. On the 23/04/08 he had his paperwork through we checked it carefully and their were no mistakes. On the 24/04/08 my husband checked the ask mid website to check that his reg number had been put on the motor insurance data base he found that it wasnt. He rang his insurers up and they said that it can take 7 to 10 days to be put on there. My husband told them he was worried as with our last insurers they didnt put it on and he got stopped by the police. It was sorted out though as my husband took his certificate to the police station. Anyway today we have recieved a letter from his new insurance with a notification of cancellation but we dont know why. My husband is at work and as I really worry about things like this I thought that I would phone them but they wont tell me nthing due to data protection. Does anybody have an idea what the problem could be as im going to sit here all day worrying till my husband gets home. We hve not lied about anything either.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.husband phoned up insurance company and they said that because he had a non fault accident they couldnt insure him. My husband declared this when he applied and it is also on the policy documents. Anyway they are now saying that we have to find another insurers and they are going to transfer the deposit over to them. On the letter that I originally recieved today it gave us 5 days notice of cancellation when I spoke to the company today he didnt know wether we were still insured or not. WHAT the hell is going on. We are now waiting for a manager to phone us.
What the hell is going in is that your insurance with the company has been cancelled. They don't have to give you a reason for this, they can just decide they don't want to insure you and return your deposit, which it sounds like they will be doing.
Find yourself another insurance company who will cover you and sort out a new policy with them

have you still got the original insurance certificate? if so your husband can drive and just pretend you didnt receive cancellation

Ignore thebrainy123's advice that you should drive without insurance. The insurance company will have a record of their phone call with your husband so you can't now claim you didn't know. The police don't just accept acertificate a sproving insurance cover is in place - if they were to check with the insurance company they would confirm that the policy had been cancelled.
Ye I know this he would never drive without having insurance. It just seems stupid that they covered us and are now changing their minds and giving us 5 days notice. Apperently because the accident was not my husbands fault but another drivers they wont ensure us. Our broker said that he can give us another insurer but its more money. Its seems that if my husband had caused the accident we would get cheaper insurance of them.
You need to get yourself insured with another company asap and definitely not drive the car like some clever burke suggested. Most insurer's will put you on cover straight away on payment of the premium or deposit It seems that
the insurance company has decided they don.t want to insure your husband possibly something to do with why he got stopped or some insurance clerk has simply made a mistake and compounded on it. Most of them don't give a toss and personally I would change to another insurer because I doubt you could rely on them if the need arose anyway. May be an idea to give us a hint who they are so we can all stay clear of them.

I'm very concerned about this - if you disclosed the accident when applying for the insurance, their criteria would have flagged up straight away as to whether you were acceptable or not - there must be something more to it than that.
Without meaning to sound funny, was that previous accident in any way ''dodgy'', because if it was, then your husband will be loaded on every conceiveable database we have, and you won't get insurance again.
Let me know what the insurer's come back to you with as a non-fault accident shouldn't really make a difference to be honest.
Do you have any disclosed convictions on your licence? I'm really confused as to why they have taken this line of action as insurers have strict underwriting criteria they have to adhere to when taking on new business. The only reason we would refuse the insurance like this is if something came up after the policy had been taken out.

Thanx for all your replies. Got insurance now with a different company. It seems now that our last insurer made a mistake and shouldnt of accepted us as they only specialise in insuring high risk drivers as they some how thought that the accident was my husbands fault even though he was not in the car when the accident happened. (husband had parked his car outside a shop, someone reversed into his car, person waited by car till my husband came out of shop gave address and phone number) husband declared not at fault and other person admitted full blame. Also my husband has got a clean driving licence so obviously they got it very wrong somewhere.
