dvd burner for powerbook g4 running OSX 10.3.9
5 Answers
I have seen some for sale on amazon and with amazon rather than other market seller, I prefer this.
But my problem is some dont say if they are mac compatible at all, and some that do like the Pioneer 20x int. dvdrw beige bare, say compatible with mac toast.
So does that mean i comes with toast or I am expected to have it already. I just have idvd ??? what ever that does. It does not say on amazon that the pioneer comes with the software, if it is needed I would need toast 7 .
Any help??

Click apple logo top-left, then about this mac. Then more info.
In that window, click the 'disc burning' item on the left. It'll tell you what formats you can burn to using the internal drive.
Most external drives should 'just work' with Mac OS X Panther. Assuming they're USB.
Make sure you buy an external drive, and not just a bare internal drive. (The external drive will come with a decent case, and a USB connection.)

Concerning toast: most probably don't include it.
You don't need to buy toast though.
iTunes will burn music files to DVD. iDVD will burn films to DVD. iPhoto will burn photo albums to DVD.
To burn files and make backups of stuff, either use the burn folders in Finder (see the help on that), or use
http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/
That's a free app for burning stuff. Works well.
Personally I tend to use Disco app. Small price (compared to Toast), very minimalist, and works great.

10.3 is panther :P
And yes, download that burn link above. It really just uses the system's built-in burning abilities, but makes it easier to use.
Most external DVD writers probably won't explicitly say they work with a Mac, but the vast majority will do anyway. Perhaps try and buy from a known brand -- LG, plextor, sony, panasonic, etc.
