Why were Pearl Jam never as big as Nirvana or Soundgarden, despite being so much better?

yeah, but musical taste is subjective. personally i like soundgarden and nirvana betterer.

Yes, very subjective. I too like Nirvana and Soundgarden more than Pearl Jam (though PJ have some ace songs), but think the Screaming Trees were better than any of them.
