I have this great plunger which you fill with water by sucking water into it and then force the water into the plug hole - it works every time as the pressure blasts away the debris. Word of warning though which is hold some tissue over the overflow hole in the sink as I have had a facefull of black stuff as the water shoots out. Yuk.

Make sure the sink has water in it so the pressure works better (i.e. do not wait for the water to go down fully).
plunger that powers blocks away.
fill bath/sink a couple of inches (plug in when you have shower? ) hold end under water ,suck up water then blast it down plug hole and push pull handle a couple off times. repeat a couple of times , job done . thirty seconds.
as the vicar said, cover the over flow 'coz it's linked to the plug hole and you wouldn't want a face full of nasties would you?
