oil light remains on

anyone give me a rough idea of this problem,
vauhall aglia,warning oil light appears,ive topped up the oil to reqd amount needed but oil light still remains lit, any answers on this?

If your sure oil levels are correct then it could be low oil pressure caused by a faulty oil pump.
You do not say how old or how many miles the engines done.
Needs to be investigated asap, otherwise a 'seized' engine might result.

Thanks for the answer,
the car is 7 years old
its done 50,000 miles,
now on opening the oil cap the top of the filler is just like sludge around the top.

You may have a blown head gasket and water has got mixed in with the engine oil. (Has the engine overheated recently)? Unless you are very good with a set of spanners I would suggest you need a gagrage/mechanic to look at this.

ive had no overheated engine,i caught the light on about 1/4 mile from home so i didnt dare go in it again till its sorted and yes youre correct the head gasket has blown so in it goes on tuesday,
