Windows Genuine Advantage Software
5 Answers
I have 2 copies of windows, one a proper disc and one a not so proper disc (I mislaid the original and had to get a friend to copy his quickly). I have the non valid windows installed and naturally get the nag ware warnings about it being non genuine. If I were to do a repair using the valid disc with it's number. Should the Genuine Advantage bit be overidden and allow downloads again and not annoyoingly do pop ups? Opinions please

why did you get a friend to copy theirs if you have two and only lost one?
(why isn't the licence attached to the side of the case ... did it fall off?
or alternatively - if as you say ... it was genuine contact the company who sold you the machine
opinion ... put your hand in your pocket and buy a legit license....

You misunderstand, I have a legit copy, which I mislaid. I had a problem which needed a reinstall of XP, so I asked a friend to copy his to get me up and running again. I have subsequently found my original legit disc and wondered if I did a repair with it, would it overide the advantage software popups as it would then have XP with my genuine legit number.
in that case ... aplogies

Basically, you can use Microsoft's own Windows Activation Wizard to enter a valid key:
1) Backup the registry, as you will be modifying it manually
2) Create a restore point
3) Go into the registry (Start/Run)
Enter Regedit
Locate the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents
In the right pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify.
Change at least one digit of this value to deactivate Windows
4) Run Windows Activation Wizard (Start/Run as before)
Enter %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
From the activation window select Yes I want to telephone....etc
Select change product key
Enter your new key and click Update.
5) If you are returned to the previous window, click Remind me later, and then restart the computer.
6) Repeat steps 4 to verify that Windows is activated. You should receive the following message:
Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit.
7) Click OK.
