Which one ?
There were two
The Battle of Preston (1648) was a victory for Oliver Cromwell over the Royalists during the English Civil War.
The Battle of Preston (1715) was a defeat for the rebels in the Jacobite Rising.

Three actually m'dears. 1642, 1648 and 1715.
I don't think you are right about a battle at Preston in 1642, Lil O'lady.

Charles issued commissions of array in Jun 1642, and raised his standard two months later at Nottingham. The first major engagement took place at Edgehill in October. Royalist forces then threatened London.
IF you are on about the English Civil War it was 17th August 1647
