When I did a speed test on my BT line the maximum I was able to get was 1 Mb. I asked Tiscali if I could achieve more than this and was put on Tiscali max which gave me 2 Mb. How was it achievable by getting a quart into a pint pot?

Usually, the only difference between 1Mb and 2Mb speeds is the switch that is flicked at the telephone exchange when you pay them.

who is your internet provider ... BT or tiscali?

the phone line (distance from the exchange) will affect the maximum achievable speed

.... but your ISP is the one who sells you the bandwidth ... if your ISP is tiscali ... bt have nothing to do with your top speed

I was under the impression that Tiscali had installed some extra equipment in the BT exchange to get the extra speed but I could be wrong. I also thought they had used a software package which strips out redundant parts of your data (similar to Onspeed) but would that improve efficiency by 100%?

the services simply act as a proxy server with compression.
(it's often quicker to transmit 1 densely packed file than lots of little jobbies) + some other tricks to optimise transmission rates ... but not speeds.

more likely they shifted you to a less populated mtu or even more likely shifted the transmission load to the value it should have been in the first place.
