As a born and bred city girl, I was travelling back with some friends up the motor way and I kept seeing fields of very bright yellow flowers. Can anyone tell me what these were - I didn't want to show my ignorance and ask my friends! Thanks for any help

Could well be oilseed rape.
They are fields of Oil-seed Rape
They belong to the Brassica family and are a close relative of rocket.

They are grown for their seeds which produce a valuable oil.

Thanks for both your answers - I would never have guessed that - they looked really beautiful though
If it were here in the U.S., it would be mustard this time of year... Seen here: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/160/410731517_c 78d0e578b.jpg?v=0 , and here: http://www.fotosearch.com/UNW234/u11249483/
In the fields near Epping they have linseed growing. It is the most beautiful blue.
The only trouble with Oilseed Rape is that it has a really huge pollen grains which irritate asthma and hayfever. It is also carried into the native flora and is spreading quite badly. Glad you like it.

Yes, I liked them very much - we city dwellers don't appreciate the country enough
Tell me about it bimbo! Its the only thing I get itchy eyes and the sniffles from. I wish the EU would stop giving out subsidies to farmers to grow the stuff, then it would go away!!! (Rant over)
Beekeepers take their hives to the oilseed rape and get LOTS of honey quickly.
