Recyling should little ones learn at school

I try to recycle as much as i can, i struggle with my mother though she gets a carrier bag for the smallest things drives me crazy,dont think i will change her now, was thinking that it would be great to take children round some of these recycling plants to see how much waste is recycled and how they can make a difference in there future!i think they would really get involved! what do other abers think

Its a good idea, but education begins at home.

If you raise your child to seperate out all the recyclable items into the various coloured bins, plus a trip to the local bottle bank, then a subsequent 'field' trip to see what becomes of it all can only enhance understanding and appreciation.

A field trip to a landfill site would also open their eyes to what happens when we don't recycle. And a trip to a sewage treatment plant.....

I think I did all this at school as well, and that was about 20-30 years ago.

As much as I believe in it, I don't think the goverment and councils are recycling!!

I think they dump all the rubbish on the nearest landfill site!!

Also there are arguments, for and against recyling.

didnt do that at my school, recycling wasnt even on the agenda! maybe we should look to places like sweden who have a good record with recycling and see how they teach there children, maybe we have a swedish aber who could maybe enlighten us you never know!!!

funnygirl, you do have to ponder the benefits when you now get 2 or 3 refuse lorry rounds, instead of the previous one for all. Perhaps the carbon footprint of the increased regularity of the journeys negates any recyclable gain.

Still, it gives the government and the LA's a good opportunity to charge more and boost income eh.

Personally I couldn't give a toss about recycling.

Surely the people that need to be targeted are the people that come up with all the excess packaging.

At my son's school they do quite a lot on recycling they compost, sort paper etc. We have recycling bags here in the New Forest and I have to say there are usually more recycling bags out than ordinary rubbish + most recycling companies have to put some of there profit towards play areas for children I believe - certainly part of the cost of new play equipment in local park was funded under this initiative.
I think if we all do a little it mounts up to a lot, I always forget my bags (but I do try) but, I recycle, compost, use environmentally cleaning products, washing powder, fabric conditioner, and dishwasher tablets and low energy bulbs and I buy fair trade or local whenever their is an option to do so - so I don't feel guilty about the odd plastic bag.

Oh and I recycled my old mercedes estate - it went to africa to be used on a farm there, it failed MOT here but still worked and it seemed a shame to scrap it!!!!
