dog surgery

my 6 month old westie Toby had a fracture in a bone/cartlige in his leg. the vet operated on him yesterday & put 2 pins in there & as expected he was really sore & upset, but during the night he had really runny poo with a bit of blood in it. is it just that he swallowed blood from when they put the tube in this throat? is this normal after surgery? i did ring the vet & the receptionist just said if you are worried bring him in, but sounded like they were just covering themselves.

Poor little man to have surgery so young.
I am no expert, but, I would have thought it is a bit of gastric diahroah, either connected with the anasesthetic or stress from the surgery. I would give him a bland light diet for a few days, boiled chicken and/or fish, but if you are worried and there is no improvement or you see more blood, ring the vet, and ask to speak to him, and not the receptionist.
Hope he is feeling a lot better soon.

Hi, I'd ask to speak to the vet (although it will be an emergency vet today).
My sister spoke to a receptionist when her puppy was itching, she told her to put on sudocream as it more than likely was some sort of nappy rash and she did that with her dogs. My sister did this and too her horror he had an allergic reaction and nearly died. Receptionists do not always know the best thing to do so please do not go on her/his advice alone ring the vet. It may not be anything too serious - but it is always best to be safe than sorry.
