Need help.  About 3 months ago we had to put down our oldest dog :(.  The problem is the surviving one, who in his three years had only ever known the older one.  Biggest of the problems is that regularly he now gets sickness and diahorrea (spell?), which has meant several vets trips, but generally he has lost his spark.  He doesnt obviously pine, the vet cant suggest a solution, and he is on a new diet of tripe (recommended by someone!).Any ideas please?

Although he may not be obviously pining for the old dog, he might be missing the feeling of belonging to a pack (albeit a small one) and the daily competition that that involves.  I notice with my three that they are all far more enthusiastic about their food, for instance, when they are terrified that one of the others might muscle in on their bowl!  On their own, they tend to fanny about, picking out bits they like etc. but not really wolfing it down!   If you don't want to get another dog (or even a kitten might help) then could you perhaps go walking with another dog (and owner)?  It might revive his interest in life.
