For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.That might mean that you're not using a type of litter that she likes. Some cats also seem to like pooing in 1 tray & weeing in a different one.
If you're using a particularly gravely litter, try a softer type. In fact when faced with this problem, I get several trays & fill them with different types to see if that makes a difference. Your cat seems to be saying that she prefers the softer carpet, to whatever you're offering so it's worth a go. She is definitely telling you that something's not right.
Also, if it persists, I'd wonder if she didn't have cystitis. Sometimes a cat will associate the tray with pain & chose to go elsewhere...just a thought.
Try moving the litter tray somewhere else (not far though) and spraying that area of carpet with something strong smelling, like detol spray (seeing as it has antibacterial qualities too). That should put the cat off using that particular area.
Usually what draws cats back to use the same area is smell more than anything else, so it could solve your problems.
