The most important place to start is waking. It is much easier to get to sleep earlier if you didn't get up at 10 the night before. Get to bed on time, the same time every night and up the same time every morning.
Don't confuse your internal clock. Get plenty of sunlight if possible during the day, and eat meals, social if possible, at the right times.
Don't do anything stressful in the evenings, especially before going to sleep. A bit of how's your father is a great remedy......Not available on the NHS as yet.
When you go to bed:
Get the room temp right. Best is slightly cold, but not too cold.
Read a boring book. If this does not work there is a technique to try.
Turn off the lights, close your eyes, and just keep repeating 'the the the the the the' in your head. It tires the brain but does not create thoughts that would lead to other thoughts that would keep you awake. I find it works really well.
Good luck. No sleep is a bitch.

If you can get hold of some lavender essential oil and sprinkle a couple of drops on your pillow, that should help relax you and get you off to sleep. Another tip is to eat a lettuce sandwich before going to bed as lettuce contains something which is soporific ( makes sense now why Peter Rabbit fell asleep in Mr MacGregors garden after eating all those lettuces)
