Baby sleeping in their own room
10 Answers
At what age did your babies start sleeping in their own room? I know "they" reccommend 6months, but I wondered what other people's experiences were.
Thanks xx

Assuming they are within earshot you will have no trouble waking up when they cry - but you may well have trouble sleeping if they are in the same room. Babies can make an awful lot of noise when they are asleep - all the snuffling & little whimpers. Very cute, but not conducive to a good nights sleep.
Hi natalie,
With my first, she went in her own room at just 2 weeks as she just wouldnt settle otherwise. She started sleeping brilliantly as soon as she was on her own.
My second is now 3 months and still in with us. Im thining of putting her in her own room after the summer simply because my neighbour gets a garden full of noisy kids when the weathers good and as babys room will be at the back, Im not looking forward to getting her settled with their racket! lol
Do what you feel is right for you and your baby :)

Thanks for the quick responses. I am thinking of doing it over the next two weeks (she's 4weeks now), in fact I am just waiting for a cat net to arrive for the cot - I have 3 cats and although they haven't gone near her in the past 4weeks it's best to be careful, I could close the door but then I probably wouldn't hear the little mite crying!
I am sure she will find it easier than me! We went to a bbq last night and she was passed from pillar to post without a care in the world, she was fed and cuddled by people she didn't know, and fell asleep on most of them - part of me wanted her to cry just so I knew she missed me! Little b*gger :-P

My first went into his own room at about 10 months - he was born in the summer and we kept him in with us and then when we should have moved him it was winter so we waited until the spring. When my second was born, my first was only 13 months old, so we diddn't want to disturb his sleep by putting the new baby in with him and we only had two upstairs bedrooms - and I wasn't putting one downstairs. So my second stayed in our room until he was 13months old and we had moved house. Neither of them batted and eyelid about it though and I am a really sound sleeper!
Hi natalie!
Just saw this post. I know it was years since I had my babies (the 80's!!) but I thought that now F.S.I.D. recommended that babies be kept in the same room for at least 6 months to reduce risk of cot death...in which case I was miles ahead of my time as my two boys were with us for longer than that I think! I just found it easier - breast feeding, etc. Oh, sorry note to self 'Learn to read posts properly before responding' - you have put that in your post.
I'm not much help am I - blame the heat. Good luck !

well Amelia is in spare room, which will be hers eventually, but we take it in turns to sleep in with her and feed her.
Matthew went into his own room at about 4 or 6 weeks as he was being woken by us and we were woken by his snoring (we couldnt even hear TV over his noise lol)
I realise there are guidelines because of SIDS but i know a couple who lost their baby to SIDS and they were sharing a room as per the guidelines so its not a certain way of preventing such a tragic loss.
Also it helps to get baby into a routine of bedtimes and settling themselves to sleep. To do that they really ought to go up to bed before parents so at some point they will be asleep alone in room anyway.
Can you get a monitor so that you can keep the cats out of her room anyway?

my first son went his own room at 7 weeks because he waas a light sleeper so when we got into bed or up in the night he woke up, my second son was 3 months when he went in with his brother, i personally believe that if they are going to pass away through to cot death then it will happen no matter what room they are sleeping in. i never used any blankets though and put them in a baby sleeping bag, so that there was no risk of pulling the blanket over there face
The 6 month recomendation is an old rule that (in my opinion) is outdated! These days baby monitors are very good and I think you can safely put your baby in their own room earlier! I put my little boy in his own room when he came out of his moses basket! We had an Angel Care monitor and after a few nights, we felt comfortable leaving her by herself.
Reason we did that before was because we kept waking him with our constant watching and checking!
Hope you and little one are ok x x x

We stuck the little one in the loft room at about 3 mths
The only problem we had was that we missed him, but its better in the long run.
We found that when he was in our room we'd disturb him when we came to bed, as soon as we moved him, he started to go right through the night.
Keep the baby monitor on though
