I hold strong to tradition and am aware that an engagement ring should cost the equivalent of a months' wages.
Can anybody tell me if this net or gross and does one include un-earned income in this figure?
Is being tight an unattractive attribute?

What a *******! He ran off with his secretary and my friend went on to marry a fella who was as poor as a church mouse - he got her a ring with a massive setting and an insy winsy chip of a diamond in the middle. I'm sure it didn't cost more than 100 but it meant the world to her.
I'd love a massive rock if it every happens to me - but another friend of mine has a ring that cost 4,000 and it sits in a box in her bedroom for 'special occasions'. The rest of the time she wears a fake one that cost 5 from Oasis in case she damages the real one. What a waste!
So, while I want the rock - summat a bit cheaper is probably more practical.

Well if she can still lift her hand when wearing you should be ashamed of yourself as you obviously haven't got one large and heavy enough (said the actress to the bishop!).
So in order to save yourself any future embarressment, may I suggest you peruse the Argos catalogue for longer than what you intended to?

When I got engaged to my first husband I was led to believe that he had 75 to spend. I was so excited and waited outside said ring shop, but on the way to meet me he had to pass numerous bookies and by the time he arrived to buy my ring he only had 21 left, we lasted 15 years and I never forgot my cheap engagement ring.
