I am sorry to have stirred up another hornets' nest by not emphasising that I was after a hint rather than the actual answer. My thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I rely too heavily on Chambers and Shorter OED, neither of which give the answer, and am mortified to find it in Collins. Lessons learnt for me!!
