main fuse

the main fuse coming into our house has blown. when an electrician looked at it , he said that he couldn't touch it as it was down to the power supplier. he did say however, that the rating was inadequate for a modern home at 30 amps and that it should be 60 amps. anyone any ideas, cos it's all double dutch to me !

Definitely down to whoever covers the grid in your area. Central Networks or Siemens or Untied Utilities etc
Most houses have 60amp, they often swap the older 100amp out.
Your power supplier should be called to then call the correct sparky out. Normally this would be a timed response job.
If they deem your wiring is faulty they may not replace the fuse, did your electrician do a Megger test?

Give the supplier a ring, just sounds like it has been overloaded, not a fault in the property, 30 amp cut out fuse is ridiculous, it should be at least 60/80 amp if not 100 amp.

It is obviously going to depend on the size and length of the main cable you have coming into the house. Modern domestic supplies have a cable rated as suitable to draw 100A so have a 100A main fuse fitted.
This is the call of the power utility company to check for you. The best scenario is they say the cable is fine and they will change the fuse to 60/80 or 100A. The worst scenario is they say the cable is too small diameter and requires upgrading back to the distribution point in the road. That will cost you significant money to do.
