New broadband connection
3 Answers
My daughter is wanting to get broadband but we are a bit unsure about setting it up. She has a phone socket on her landing, this as been cut off since she moved in the house but we have found out about re-activating it with BT. The bit we are unsure about is the wireless router. If she only has one phone socket can she plug both her phone and her router into the same socket? What else would she need to make it work? Im guessing she would need a filter then a double adapter plugged into that for the phone and router. Also once the router is plugged in does it need to be plugged into a pc to make it work or just into the phone line and then a wireless card/adapter for her pc?
Thanks :)
Thanks :)

2) You plug a microfilter into every single phone socket that you use -- whether for a phone, or router, or both. The filter splits the phone line into a socket for a phone, and a socket for the router. No other splitter required.
3) Router is plugged into microfilter, into phone socket. Then either a cable or wireless to the PC (this is up to you, but it's good to set up for the first time using cable).
4) Make sure you go for a wireless router+modem box. (Some are just routers, not modems, but you'll need a modem too.)

When u get your router it should come with a filter. You plug this into you phone socket on the landing and then you can plug your router and phone into this. If you have a wireless router you will have two options. (a) you can plug it straight into your pc via the cable supplied or (b) you can connect wirlessly with a adapter card or her pc. most wireless routers will let you do both or either. ie you coud use the cable supplied to connect to a desk top pc but still use other wireless devices such as lap tops on the same router. remember when you sent up your router to security enable it otherwise every one will be surfing while you pay. lol. it really quite simple just follow the instructions you get with the router. I'm a biff and i managed. All the best now!
