Ivy is a very hard plant and its roots seem to thrive in just about any kind of soil condition. Clematis are attractive, but the roots are supposed to be protected from hot sunshine and I fear that sun shining on hot gravel would bake the roots. Ivies also grow very quickly once established and new leaves always have a nice glossy surface to them which is attractive.
