I think the original was by Big Joe William in the 50s - it was pretty much standard fare for all the British R&B groups of the 60s. Another well known version was by Native American/Indian rockabilly cat Billy Lee Riley.

Indeed, just about anyone with a rock / blues connection has had a go, because it is a very simple riff, and anyone can play it. My favourite version is by rock monsters Budgie on their 'never Turn Your Back On A Friend' album.
