I work at a retale store. My employer says that I have to put my availability into our computer system for our schedules to be generated. However, they say that we must be available any time every weekend. Not that it meams will necessarily be scheduled every weekend though. But they are are basically saying I have to have every weekend available at any time during store hours. Doesnt that conflict with some religions. If there are religious services on Sunday mornings, bt we have to be available to work, basically they are telling us to through our religions out the window. Can this be legal, I realize tehre is a separation of church and state but when the employers rules conflict with my religious views, isntthat an infringment on my personal rights? Any ideas on this> Thanks.

There's enough retailing going on every Sunday morning in the UK to demonstrate that you can't use this as a get-out.
Anyone i employ is given their hours out of 7 days, but a few of them never work weekends. I do my rotas 6 weeks ahead, and it is very rarely necessary to call on people at short notice, but I think if you recall your interview you will have been asked if you were flexible, and retail is 7 days trading now.

Most stores open only 6 hours aday and this would allow most people to also attend their chosen religious service.
