Dilemma!!!

ok so basically I have this amazing opportunity to get a degree for free while i work... only problem is it means I have to stay with the same company for another 6-8 years depending how fast i get the degree done.
my dilemma is that I would like to move down to London to be nearer my girlfriend a lot sooner than that time scale...
what should I do? get the free degree tieing myself into this job for almost a decade or be with the woman I love?

you need to weigh up the pros and cons.

What will the degree give you? I have a degree and I can tell you it has not helped me. Does the degree help within your current job?

How long have you been with your partner? Have you spoken to her about this?

it really depends on what you, yourself see as the more important. your free degree?? or your girlfriend?? it is realy up to you in which you see more important. i would go with the degree myself because its never guaranteed that your ever going to stay with a partner.

I did a degree and a hnc in 4 years part time.

If you work and study part time a degree isn't that expensive

I have to agree with Rev I did a full time degree in BSc Industrial Design, in 4 yrs.

Seems a great prospective which carries a heavy commitment.

1) Get your girlfriend to move to where you live
2) Stay in your job and get a free degree

It's a hell of a long time to commit to one company if you're not sure - do you like the job? Would you stay with them if say the degree would only take 2 or 3 years?
Also as 4GS said, what about the possibility of your girlfriend moving to be near you?

It may be a lot to ask but why can't the girlfriend move to accommodate you getting the degree? A good education cost a lot; you'll be getting it for free and be receiving a salary. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices to get the finer things we desire. I will not allow anyone get in my way of getting a good education, especially if I don't have to pay for it. Eight years will go by in no time.

Suppose something happens between you and girlfriend causing you all to go your separate ways, you'll regret passing up this opportunity for the rest of your life. I hope you make the right choice. All the best to you.

The degree would be computer science which is directly related to my work and is a subject I�m greatly interested in. but its a sizable chunk of my life that i would be committing to it. It would be part time so i would still be working throughout just with a couple of nights a week at uni + some half days during the year.
I will have a talk to my gf about it and see what she says.
although i don�t think she will want to hold me back so i will get a biased view from her just saying do it. but i don�t want to make her unhappy just because she wants me to be happier because I�m working my balls off to get a degree in my spare time.


teddy bear you are right who knows how long a relationship will last but its been a good 8 months so far and usually i get shot of women at the 3 month and 6 month mark if i don�t feel its working.

basicly i can finnish the degree in 4-6 years but i would have to sign a contract that i would pay back the full fees if i leave before i finnish the course or within 24 months of completion. hence the amount of time it would take me.

My degree was from 1pm-9pm one day per week

I graduated in 2000 but am sure at the time it was about �500 per year.

If its a grand or so just fund it yourself

I have just completed a BSc (Hons) partime (2 years) the company paid for it. But if I leave within 4 years of completion then I will have to pay it back. The amount decreases the longer I stay. It cost the company 1, 600 for the 2 years, and can be paid back in instalments. All the best
